Young people at Roots put their creativity to work by designing and producing custom pin badges for local community organisations
At Roots™, we believe that practical projects can teach valuable life skills while making a positive difference in the local community. Recently, our young people took on an exciting challenge: producing custom pin badges for community projects, including the fantastic “Sing for Joy” initiative delivered by Together We Shine CIC.
The project gave participants the opportunity to experience the creative and entrepreneurial side of community work. From discussing design ideas to producing the finished badges, everyone involved had a chance to contribute their own ideas and see a project through from start to finish.
We created five bespoke pin badges for the Sing for Joy project, helping to celebrate the work they do within the community. Alongside this, we also produced badges for fellow community organisations, including GYPO, strengthening local connections and supporting the incredible work taking place across North East Lincolnshire.
While making badges might sound simple, the project encouraged a range of important skills. Young people developed problem-solving abilities, learned the importance of attention to detail, and experienced the satisfaction that comes from creating something tangible for others.
Perhaps most importantly, the project introduced entrepreneurial thinking. Participants explored how products are designed, made, and delivered to customers or organisations. These experiences help young people understand the value of creativity, teamwork, and enterprise while building confidence in their own abilities.
Projects like this perfectly reflect the Roots™ ethos: giving young people meaningful opportunities to learn through doing. By working on real projects for real organisations, participants gain practical experience that can support them in education, employment, and future ventures.
We’re incredibly proud of the badges produced and grateful to the organisations that trusted our young people with their projects. We can’t wait to get started on the next creative challenge and continue finding new ways to support our community while helping young people grow in confidence and capability.
