Sport England invests in grassroots sport and physical activity across the country, helping organisations create opportunities that make it easier for people of all ages and backgrounds to get active and stay active.

From first steps to first finishes – with support from Sport England, Roots’ Mini Olympics is opening doors to sport, confidence, and possibility

Sport England strengthens community sport across England, funding projects that remove barriers and expand access to high-quality physical activity locally. Backed by National Lottery and government investment, it supports initiatives focused on inclusion, wellbeing, and long-term participation.
Sport England

At Roots, support from Sport England has helped deliver our Mini Olympics project – a dynamic, inclusive programme inspired by Olympic and Paralympic sport. It offers young people from some of the most deprived communities in North East Lincolnshire the chance to experience sport in a safe, engaging and achievable way.

Through structured taster sessions and challenges, participants try sports including archery, BMXing, kayaking, boxing, ice skating and snowboarding, alongside activities that build teamwork, coordination and confidence.

The emphasis is firmly on participation over performance, helping young people build confidence, discover new interests and develop a healthier relationship with physical activity, with the aim of continuing beyond the programme.

Through its investment in community sport, Sport England helps projects like Mini Olympics at Roots deliver lasting impact – building confidence, connection and healthier futures for young people.

What The Community Says

"Synergy joined us back in 2021 with a keen gang of young people. Admittedly we were quite skeptical about their ambitious plans and agreed to provide them with a plot expecting them to give up after a few months! But here we are 5 years later, they have absolutely transformed 5 plots and have become an integral part of our community. We even have them representing young people on our Committee, they have supported us with delivering projects across the site and helped some of the older community with fixing sheds and odd jobs. We are delighted to have them here and hope they continue to introduce young people to growing food, horticulture and nature."
