Read ArticleRoutes within Roots designed to open up the UK’s most inspiring outdoor spaces to all of our members, creating opportunities to explore, experience, and grow beyond the limits of everyday environments.
With the invaluable support of Vimto, Routes enables our young members to access a wide range of incredible locations across the country – from rolling countryside and rugged coastal paths to historic woodland trails and open moorland. Each trip is carefully planned to be both accessible and challenging, giving participants the chance to experience places they may not otherwise have the opportunity to visit.
Every journey is built around active, hands-on adventure. Members take part in activities such as hill walking, navigation and orienteering, team challenges, coastal exploration, and outdoor fitness-based tasks. These experiences naturally build essential life skills including teamwork, communication, resilience, problem solving, and leadership. For many, it also introduces personal challenges such as managing heights, endurance, and stepping outside their comfort zone – whether that’s climbing, scrambling, or simply pushing further than they thought possible.
Crucially, Routes provides these experiences in a safe, structured, and supportive environment. Participants are guided by experienced leaders who ensure every activity is appropriately risk-assessed and inclusive, while still maintaining a strong sense of adventure and independence.
More than just outdoor trips, Routes is about confidence, camaraderie, and discovery. It gives members the chance to see what they are capable of, build lasting memories, and develop a genuine connection with the outdoors – often in ways they wouldn’t have been able to access without being part of the Roots project.

"We met Synergy in 2017 as we needed support with accessing grant funding. Since then we have formed a really strong partnership that has enables us to completely renovate our facilities and engage more young people in rural activities. The young people that attend Synergy are some of the kindest, most polite and dedicated young people we have come across and we love having them here at the Centre to enjoy all sorts of rural activities."
