Inspiring young people to try out new sports and physical activities
This Mini Olympics project was designed to root young people in positive, engaging physical activity inspired by Olympic and Paralympic disciplines. It provided an opportunity for young people from some of the most deprived communities in North East Lincolnshire to step outside of their everyday experiences and access a wide range of sports they may not otherwise encounter.
Through a structured programme of taster sessions and activity-based challenges throughout school holidays, young people were able to try Olympic-themed sports such as archery, ice skating, snowboarding, kayaking, and boxing, alongside a variety of other physical activities including hiking, parkour and climbing to promote movement, teamwork, and personal development.
The aim was to create an inclusive and exciting environment where participation was prioritised over performance, encouraging young people to build confidence, discover new interests, and develop a more positive relationship with physical activity.
By exposing participants to such a diverse range of sports, the project helped to break down barriers to participation, showing that sport is accessible, enjoyable, and something they can continue to engage with beyond the programme itself.
