Read ArticleThis project gives young people the opportunity to spend time on local allotments where they can step away from their everyday environments and get fully immersed in hands-on growing, outdoor learning, and community-focused activities. Set within safe, supportive green spaces, it introduces practical gardening and food-growing skills in a way that feels engaging, rewarding, and completely different from traditional classroom learning.
Every Sunday, participants work together to tend the allotments, learning how food is grown from seed to harvest through real hands-on experience. From planting and watering to maintaining crops and harvesting produce, young people gain a deeper understanding of food security, sustainability, and the importance of growing fresh, local food for themselves and the wider community. These sessions encourage patience, consistency, and pride in seeing the direct results of their work over time.
Alongside growing produce, young people develop a wide range of practical and life skills that stay with them far beyond the allotment itself. They learn about the life cycle of plants, seasonal growing, soil health, and the safe use of a wide range of gardening tools and equipment. Working together outdoors also helps build teamwork, communication, responsibility, and confidence, while encouraging young people to support one another and take ownership of shared tasks.
The allotment sessions provide a calm and welcoming environment where young people can slow down, connect with nature, and enjoy time away from the pressures of daily life. Being outdoors and working with the land encourages mindfulness, resilience, and wellbeing, while creating opportunities for positive social interaction and personal growth.
Overall, the allotment project is about far more than simply growing food – it’s about creating meaningful experiences that empower young people with practical knowledge, transferable skills, confidence, and a stronger connection to both nature and their local community. This project is proudly supported by funding from the East Coast Communities Fund and the Postcode Places Trust.

"We met Synergy in 2020 during COVID lockdowns and they helped us to secure some grant funding for our Woodland Retreat project in Binbrook. As a result of this they have been bringing young people to the woods to experience bushcraft skills, off grid living, archery, navigation skills every Saturday! They have created a really wonderful camp for young people here and are a huge part of the community. It's great to see so many young people from deprived areas accessing and enjoying natural woodlands and the Lincolnshire Wolds, something they would not have done without the support of Synergy."
