Rooted in both art and technology, Asher has developed a strong set of skills and qualities that make her a brilliant role model and a trusted adult, showing that disabilities can be transformed into abilities.

Asher has been attending Roots since June 2020, joining during the challenges and isolation of lockdown. A naturally talented and enthusiastic artist, she has brightened up the Roots space with her own work and is always willing to support others during sessions. She’s also picked up a range of technical skills along the way, including 3D printing and sublimation, and is now even helping to develop this very website.

Since turning 18, Asher has taken on even more responsibility as a trusted key holder and Director, working closely with the management team to help shape new opportunities and guide Roots as it continues to grow.

She also brings her much-loved dog, Dash, who is a regular favourite at sessions. Dash enjoys meeting everyone – and has a particular soft spot for the squirrels at Lanzalotty!

Roots and Me...

What’s something you’ve learned here that you didn’t expect to?

Since attending Roots activities I’ve discovered I’m really quite techy!! I’ve learned how to use the sublimation and Cricut Machines printing my art work on T-shirts and display boards and I’ve also been getting to grips with the 3D printer and have printed all sorts of gadgets.

What was your first impression of Roots?

I clearly remember my first session at Roots which was a boxing session and then we all had dinner together. It was a great day and I’ve been coming back ever since.

How has Roots helped you as a person?

I really did not think I would go to University but the support and confidence gained from attending Roots enabled me to go and succeed in my course and find a part time job despite my disabilities.
